Before establishing the Faculty of Science at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, the basic science courses at this university were taught in an academic center. This scientific center was established in the mid-1970s with a total of seven academic members. Soon after, this center turned into the Department of Physics and started the admission of students in bachelor's degree in physics. In 1972, an appropriate building at the university campus was allocated to the physics department in the Faculty of Science. By 1975, the physics department succeeded to have 16 faculty members, including ten Ph.D.'s and six lecturer members with master's degrees. Until 1979, the only degree that was granted in the physics department was the bachelor's degree. After 1979, at the beginning of the Islamic Revolution, and soon after the Iraq-Iran imposed war, the number of faculties' members was reduced. By 1990, the department of Physics was granting two bachelor's degrees in teaching physics and physics. The acceptance of students for master's degree in Physics, in two majors of solid-state physics and fundamental physics, was initiated in August 1991 with 4 students. Eight years later, in 1999, with permission from the ministry of science, research, and technology, the initial steps were taken to create a doctorate program in the physics department. Then, the first Ph.D. students were accepted in the second semester of the academic year 2002-2003. At present, the physics department has 17 Ph.D. academic members. The Department of Physics is now accepting students for degrees in undergraduate physics, masters in five majors of the experimental condensed matter, theoretical condensed matter, fundamental physics, optics and lasers, and plasma physics, and also, Ph.D.'s in four majors of the experimental condensed matter, theoretical condensed matter, fundamental physics, and optics and lasers.
