    After the establishment of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences in 1975, it was in 1979 that this faculty embarked on its first students' admission in the B.A. course of sociology. In 1990, sociology was replaced with teaching social sciences, and as the department requested in 1998, it was named research in social sciences instead of teaching social sciences. The department started graduate students' admission shortly after it was allowed to run M.A. courses of sociology in 2003.The department ran Ph.D. coursesin 2017.

    The educational orientation of the social sciences department is towards various sociological issues in both undergraduate and graduate courses and also Iran's social concerns in Ph.D. courses.

    However, the research orientation of the department is towards issues like:

    -Investigating the status of social capital in Khuzestan and the reasons behind its erosion

    -Investigating the social consequences of emigration from Khuzestan

    -Looking into the future of Khouzestan demography

    -Investigating the reasons behind and consequences of violent crimes in Khuzestan

    -Investigating the reasons behind a decline in social trust among citizens

    -Investigating the consequences of uneven urban development

    -Investigating the reasons behind and social consequences of dust storm in Khuzestan

    -Investigating marriage sociology in Khuzestan

    -Investigating the consequences of carrying firearms by people and using them in different ceremonies

    -Investigating the status of cultural citizenship in Khouzestan

    -Investigating the conditions of female heads of the household in Khuzestan

    -Investigating the status of drugs and addiction in Khuzestan

    -Analyzing underage marriages and then the following divorces

    The majors of the department:

    Sociology studies, sociology planning, sociology, sociology of social issues in Iran.

    Four associate professors, one assistant professor, and two instructors form the faculty members of the department. 251 undergraduates, 41 graduates, and 9 Ph.D. students are currently studying in the department.
