The Department of Basic Sciences was established in 1977. It was the first department established under this faculty. The aim of this department is enhancing the relationship between clinical disciplines and basic sciences and represents the basic scientific disciplines that are required for the education of veterinarians. The main focus of this Department is teaching and conducting research in different fields of basic veterinary science, including teaching courses to provide the essential basis for learning physiopathology of different diseases. Based on its teaching and research capacities this department has launched various postgraduate programs including the Ph.D. program for Anatomy and Embryology, Comparative Histology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology, and the Master's program for Physiology and Histology.
Graduate Courses: Master of Science of Veterinary Histology and Physiology. Ph.D of Comparative Veterinary Histology, Anatomical Sciences and Biochemistry.

The histology section of the Department of basic sciences was established with the start of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 1975 in association with the pathology section. By the beginning of 1989. It was separated from the pathology section and became a separate one.
Is to prepare the DVM student to know the normal microscopical of structure of the different body organs and system in domestic animals, birds, and marine to enable them to correlate between the histological structure and function of various tissues and organs. The goal is to educate a graduate who is able to follow the dynamic updating in the science of histology and cell biology in recent textbook, colored atlases and Internet.
