Since 1973, the Department of Agricultural Machinery Engineering, now the Department of Biosystems Engineering, has been a leader in educating, training, and providing innovational engineering solutions to agricultural problems in Iran and specially Khuzestan Province. The department's original mission was to train specialists for how to use a variety of machines in agriculture. Currently, by taking advantage of 13 faculty members, about 150 undergraduate students, 30 graduate students, and 10 Ph.D. students, that mission has evolved to encompass a global view of the entire food production system–the wise management of natural resources in the production, processing, storage, handling, and use of food fiber and other biological products.

Current research areas include effective management of agricultural inputs, scheduling farm operations, soil tillage and management systems, agricultural machine design and automated controls of greenhouses, designing food processing systems, constructing food processing machines, recycling agricultural wastes, agricultural water quality and management, precision farming systems, and agricultural safety.

Renewable energies, especially biofuels have increasingly been considered. The Emerging research areas in biosystems engineering are the use of biosensors, image processing, biological systems modeling, and the design and control of biological systems and processes.  Biorenewable and biofuel products and processes are an important focus of these research efforts.
